Waste generation is an indicator of inefficient process and the needless depletion of valuable resources. Manitobans generate over a million tonnes of waste annually. The ability of local governments to continue to manage the quantities and types of waste now produced is in question. The hazardous nature of much of this waste increases the risk to the environment and human health. Manitoba’s resource recovery (recycling) efforts, while more effective in some sectors than in others, are an inadequate response to the problem.
